Tori Praver has a particular kind of credibility that most swimwear designers spend careers trying to acquire: she has worn the swimwear. As one of the most recognized models in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue — appearing in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 editions, including as the subject of celebrated body-paint work by Joanne Gair — Praver understood from the inside what a great swimsuit needed to do. She knew what held up under a camera lens in direct sun. She knew what stayed in place through motion and water. She knew the difference between swimwear that photographed well and swimwear that actually fit. When she launched Tori Praver Swimwear in 2009, she was not theorizing about swimwear design. She was translating a decade of lived expertise into a product.

From Maui to Milan to Her Own Label

Tori Praver was born in San Diego, California, and raised on Maui, Hawaii — a geography that placed the ocean at the center of her identity from childhood. She spent her early years surfing, swimming, and absorbing the particular visual culture of Hawaii: its light, its flora, its color palette, its relationship to water. Discovered at thirteen at a Lahaina supermarket, she went on to work for Guess, Yamamay, Tally Weijl, and Liu-Jo, appeared on multiple covers of Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Cover magazines, and became the youngest face of Guess at age seventeen.

Her initial career goal had always been fashion design. The SI Swimsuit platform gave her visibility, but it also gave her something more useful: direct access to how the industry's best swimwear worked at the level of construction, materials, and fit. "When I started the line it was only me, me and my pencil and paper, and it was really scary and very risky. I invested everything into that," she has said. "I kind of just had to do it. There was no turning back."

Hawaii as Design Language

Tori Praver Swimwear is rooted in the aesthetic of Hawaii — specifically the version of Hawaii that a working surfer and model encounters: not the kitschy tropical of souvenir shops, but the genuine visual language of islands. Earth tones alongside vivid tropical accents. Photography-derived prints — including silk-screened images her then-fiancé took of beaches at night. Minimal hardware balanced against precise ruching techniques that, as Praver has described, "allow the suits to hug in all of the right places and give them an amazing fit."

The design philosophy centers on versatility — the ability to surf in a suit and sunbathe in the same piece without compromise. Praver has spoken directly to this: "It's all about versatility, and being able to surf and sunbathe in the same suit." That dual function requirement produces a swimwear that looks elevated but performs like gear — a combination that the brand's customer base, drawn from Hawaii, California, and coastal communities worldwide, specifically looks for.

Price Points and the Premium of Craftsmanship

Tori Praver Swimwear sits comfortably in the premium market. Tops range from approximately $110 to $147, bottoms from $94 to $127. These are not impulse prices — they reflect garments made with genuine attention to construction, fit, and materials. The brand has been carried in Hawaii boutiques including I Heart Hanalei, luxury resort properties including Kukio Golf & Beach Club, and through major online retailers. Its distribution reflects a customer who shops with intention and returns to pieces that deliver.

Collections are small, focused, and thematic — each carrying a specific design vocabulary that reflects Praver's ongoing interests at the moment of creation. The SS13 collection, titled Ventus Scopis (Latin for "wind swept"), drew on earth tones — deep purple, sandy brown, sea glass — and incorporated novel details like charms. The brand's consistent evolution reflects a designer who genuinely loves the process: "Every collection, every piece of design, I learned something. There's always things you can make better and continue to learn and grow from."

Resort-Ready, Hawaii-Rooted

The Tori Praver Swimwear collection available through PerfectKini spans the brand's current swim and resort-ready offering. These are pieces designed for women who travel to places worth photographing and want swimwear that keeps up — through a snorkeling session in the morning and a beachside dinner at sunset. The Hawaiian soul of the brand shows in the ease of the pieces: nothing performative, nothing stiff. Just the specific confidence of a swimsuit designed by someone who has spent her life in the water.
